1. Medion Wireless Router MDWLAN140/MD95038 Modem
Not Working
In anticipation of upgrading to Broadband which you can now get for just
£10/Month with unlimited usage- I purchased a Wireless router From ALDI - What
attracted me to this was that it also had a built in 56k modem as backup to
ADSL.
As i am still on 56K this is Ideal. So after rushing home imagine my
dissapointment when I could not get any response from the modem.
These are the steps I took in order to find the problem:-
a. search newsgroups for any info from other users, all
I could find out was that others also had problems but with connecting to
ADSL (I have this to look forward to) there was nothing about 56k modem
problems. I also found out that there was an update for the Firmware Version
1.02 Download here - http://www1.medion.de/downloads/download.pl?id=2780&type=treiber&filename=wlanmd95038web.exe&lang=uk
b. Update Firmware this I did using a Wireless link, this
was to the horror of Tech support who only recomend using a LAN. Thinking back I
should have used a LAN connection but as at the time I was only using the
Wireless connection and it was easy just to press the button rather than
install a LAN card and set up the Connection.
c. I went through and re-checked all my settings once again.
However in order to narrow down the problem I dissabled all security features on
the router
Firewall - Deactivated
Further Measures - all Deactivated
Wireless network encryption - Disabled
Analog connection Enabled with ISP details entered
Desktop PC Firewall - Disabled
Since I could already communicate with the router I know these were not the
problem I was running out of options - How does the router know it has
to Dial out?.
d. I decided that I had spent enough time looking into this
after all it is supposed to be a one click setup so I resorted to calling
Medion on 01793715715 and getting put through to tech support. (The Freephone
number did not work from the UK) After a little chat I was asked if I had my DUN
(Dial Up Network) set to dial my default ISP Which it wasn't since I never have
this set then I was asked if my LAN setting was set to Auto detect, I had forgot
about this and found it was not set. After enabling this by going to Start -
Control panel - Internet Options - connections - Lan Settings - and tick the box
automatically detect settings - I found it still did not work.
Medion then suggested I delete all my DUN connections as WIN XP may still be
trying to use these. I was reluctant to do this as they were all set to Not Dial
a connection I did not think this would be the problem. Medion could not suggest
anything else so Off I went to investigate further.
e. I decided that rather than delete my DUN's of which I
have a few set up I would try a different computer, so out came an old laptop
with W2000. The wireless connection was straight forward and after checking
there were no Dial up connections present I checked the modem on the Router
and guess what it still did not work.
f. Next step was to try it using a LAN connection so out
came an old network card 10 mins later I was connected to the router and Guess
what still no Modem connection.
g. By now I was begining to think that the modem part of the
router was faulty. However after a physical inspection I spotted the problem.
After unplugging the router telephone connecter RJ11 I noticed that the
connections used were the two middle pins 3 & 4 which is correct.
However at the BT end it is still pins 3 & 4 which is
incorrect it should change over to pins 2 & 5. Since the
router status page indicates that the Line is OK I thought that maybe the
connections were crossed over in the RJ11 to BT431A adapter, they were not.
I couldn't change the connections over in the socket as this would mean that the
socket is then not standard and anyway pin 3 is used for the Ringer. Fortunately
I had a spare adapter plug which was easy to change over the connections. Once
the connections had been swapped over to pins 2 & 5 the modem burst into
life.
Its strange why the status page indicated Line OK when clearly it wasn't, it
must have picked up the OK signal from the Ringer wire.
Response from Medion - Initial response was that they had not heard of this
problem and will look into it. As of yet they have not got back to me with a
solution. Reminder email sent to them on 29/7/05.
If you can't wait for a solution from Medion you can try opening up an RJ11
to BT plug adapter and rewire to the correct pins. Alternatively if you
have a spare BT socket, 6 inches of wire and a plug you can make a small
extension type adapter.
Until we get a response from Medion I would not attempt to open the adapter
that came with the router as this would invalidate any warranty.
Do not change over the wiring in the RJ11 to RJ11 cable since this is also
used for ADSL.
Do not change over the wiring in the socket since this would then not be
compatible with anything else
See my Telephone page for further wiring
information.
Now that's sorted I have ordered ADSL 1Meg which is only
£10/Month and has no restrictions on usage or capacity, sounds
too good to pass up.
At the moment this is a special offer with only 95 places left (27/7/05).
Normaly it is 512k for £10/month.
If you are interested the website is http://www.e7even.com and if you subscribe
please enter the referal code of 710299 and I will split any
commission that I get curently it is £20.
Hopefully Broadband will be a smoother transition.

4. How best to use your
Laptop with a wireless network in order to access your emails on a
PC:-
The best way I have found for me is to just use my laptop as a workstation /
terminal and Logon to my main PC using Remote Desktop this way all my
emails are in one place there is no synchronising to do. If I were to use my
Laptop away from home then I just export any emails to my PST file on the
desktop when I get back.
I also have access to all of the programs and files that are loaded on my
main PC.
Another advantage of this is that I can set my PC running a program and then
Switch back to the Laptop to do something else.
This may not be the best for your setup but it works for me and as of yet I
have not found any problem/disadvantage.
Remote desktop can be accessed by going to Start Menu - All Programs -
Accessories - communications - Remote desktop
It will need to be set up on both Laptop and Desktop.
5. Problem connecting to a wireless access point
QUESTION: I have a notebook computer running XP Service
Pack 2 with a wireless NIC. When I try to connect to my friend's wireless
network, it shows up in the list of available networks but if I select it to
connect, I get a message that says "Windows is unable to connect to the selected
network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of
available networks and try to connect again." I'm definitely in range of the
network (right in the same room as the wireless access point). And when I
refresh the list, the network still shows up there. What's the matter? Thanks! -
Jon B.
ANSWER: One possibility is that your friend's wireless
network is set to use shared authentication. The Windows XP wireless service
assumes that all the WAPs it detects use open authentication. With shared
authentication, you have to know the key (password) set by your friend on the
WAP. Here's how to configure your computer to connect to a network that uses
shared authentication:
- Click Start | Connect to | Show All Connections.
- Double click the icon for your wireless network adapter.
- Click the General tab, then click the Properties button.
- Click the Wireless Networks tab.
- Click the Add button.
- Enter the SSID (network name) that's set in the network's
WAP.
- Under Network Authentication, select Shared.
- Uncheck the checkbox that says "The key is provided for me
automatically."
- In the Network Key box, type the key set on the WAP, and type
it again in the Confirm Network Key box.
- Click OK.
6. Wireless Network settings - These are my curent
settings which seem to work ok on my Laptop and Medion MD95038 router
1. Initially dissable any firewalls including the one built into XP - They
can easily be re-enabled once your network is working correctly.
2. On the Lap top Start the wireless Lan utility or whatever program you use
for setting up the wireless network and make sure that Initially Encryption is
switched off - as above it can be enabled once connection is established.
3. Also set the correct Channel number as used by the router, automatic
setting should be fine however I prefer to set this to a specific channel.
4. Set the Network type as Access point.
5. Open Network connections then right click on the wireless network
connection and select properties. tick both boxes at the bottom for show icon
and notify for poor link connection.
6. highlite TCPIP and click the properties button.
You have 2 options here:-
select automatic for both IP address and DNS or set manually which is what I
prefer as it seems more reliable and I have more control with
Firewalls. set as follows:- Enter IP address
192.168.0.102 Enter Subnet mask as
255.255.255.0 then enter Default gateway as
192.168.0.100 for Medion MD95038 router. Now select
DNS Server address and enter the default settings as displayed on your Router
Ethernet Expert settings page.
7. Under advanced settings you should have IP address
192.168.0.102 Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.100 and automatic Metric.
8. Under DNS tab you should have the 2 DNS address as entered above
Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes - should be
ticked
Register this connections address in DNS should also be
ticked
Nothing else on this page should be selected
9. Under the WINS tab only the Default setting is selected.
10. Save all the settings and Re boot the Lap top After a few minutes
You should see an Icon appear indicating that you have an active wireless
connection. If you open Internet Explorer and enter
192.168.0.100 you should then see the Medion Router.
If you have a desktop computer which is also working ok to the Router then
you should now be able to connect to this either through Remote Desktop which is
what I use or by opening up windows explorer and accessin the PC's drives
through Network Places.
For this you need to ensure that both Lap top and Desktop are using their own
unique computer name and are on the same Domain/Workgroup
This can be checked by Right clicking on My computer and select the Computer
name Tab Click the buttons to change these but the domains must be the same for
Both Laptop and Desktop. Re boot after making changes.
On both the Laptop and Desktop Open Window explorer or File manager and right
click on the Folders you want to share and select the option for Sharing and
security. From here you need to tick the box to share on a network and whether
you want to allow them to change your files.
Once completed you should now be able to go to entire network and see the
Workgroup / Domain along with both Laptop and Desktop computer names. Double
click on these to see the drives / folders that you have enabled for
sharing.
Don't forget once everything is working OK Enable all security, Firewalls and
encryption for your wireless network. If you enable these one at a time then If
things stop working you will know what the problem is.
7. LAN Settings - These are my curent settings which
seem to work ok on my desk top PC and Medion MD95038 router
1. Network connections / Local area connection/ properties tick show
icon in notification area
2. under authentication tab - Nothing is selected
3. under advanced tab then Settings Disable windows firewall - Re
enable once everything is working OK.
4. If you have any other Firewall running then disable as
above
5. Back to General tab / network card config - do not make any changes this
should be left as default settings.
6. select TCP/IP then click Properties You have 2 options here:-
select automatic for both IP address and DNS or set manually which I prefer
as it seems more reliable and I have more control with Firewalls. set
as follows:- Enter IP address 192.168.0.101 Enter
Subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 then enter Default gateway as
192.168.0.100 for Medion MD95038 router. Check Ethernet
settings for your router and make sure that DHCP Server is activated with
First IP of 192.168.0.100.
7. Now select DNS Server address and enter the default settings as displayed
on your Router Ethernet Expert settings page.
8. Under advanced settings you should have IP address
192.168.0.101 Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.100 and automatic Metric.
9. Under DNS tab you should have the 2 DNS address as entered above
Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes - should be
ticked
Register this connections address in DNS should also be
ticked
Nothing else on this page should be selected
10 Under the WINS tab only the Default setting is selected.
11 Under Internet options / connections tab make sure that never dial
a connection is selected.
Click the LAN Settings button and select Automatically detect
settings. the other 2 boxes should not be ticked.
You should now be able to access your router using Internet explorer and IP
address 192.168.0.100
Don't forget to enable any Firewalls and security options on your PC and
router once everything is working OK.
